Most conventional parenting and educational approaches seek to “build” the intelligence of a child. But we do well to recognize that children are born with an intact intelligence, which will unfold if allowed—like a rose in bud form, which we would never seek to accelerate or optimize by prying open its petals!

Early academics (like learning to read or do math in kindergarten or even pre-school) and other “pseudo-mature” pursuits during the early years can indeed produce a child who is very bright and capable, but who can later—by middle- or high-school age—burn out, become cynical and disengaged, or even depressed, because there is no inner foundation to support this intellect.
